I don't think it's a sacrificing freedom for security kind of thing - like you said, it's a commercial transaction - but that controlling every single flight for every single contingency is making it very expensive and uncomfortable to fly, and is likely an extra drag on a fragile economy. I don't think AQ is too upset about that. Flying gets this extreme security because it's a spectacular media friendly way to die, it's not proportionate to the risk.
Costs should go down, the more it's used. I agree it's a drag, but the airlines have struggled for years...well before AQ if memory serves, and I"d bet that, while terrorism/security certainly has AN effect on this industry, most of the changes to the airlines have been based in the simple fact that we had too many airlines, too many flights, etc. Flights now are closer to full (at least the ones I've been on). If they're transmitting the same number of passengers but, say (complete speculation) cutting flights by 10%, then those savings should be able to encompass increased security costs. HOw many airline bankruptcies/mergers have there been in the last 20 years? It seems like there's one every year or two.
