One of my favorite Geo-bloggers delves into the body politic.

One must understand that us Earth Science types tend to shy away from politics(w/o nom de plums). So, kudos Graham.

Fascinating election - the Conservatives forge a majority from Ontario and the West which has never really been done before, only really Quebec and the West or Ontario and Quebec. The Conservatives finally get their big breakthrough into the GTA, Liberal heartland for nearly 50 years. Vote splitting as a result of the NDP was a factor, yet there were still Liberals losing their seats to Tories in outright bloodbaths. This is the first majority government since 2003, and the first Conservative majority since 1993 - the election when the radical right-wing western Reform Party emerged along with the separatist Bloq Quebecois to erode Conservative support to a staggering 2 seats despite 5.5 million people voting for them, dropping to fourth party status as the Bloq formed the Opposition!! The Liberals reach an historic low of 34 seats, drop to 3rd party status, and lose their role as Opposition to the NDP whom were the perpetual 3rd party since their formation in the early 1960s. Now ex-Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is only the third Liberal leader to not become PM. The separatist Bloq Quebecois were absolutely annihilated and reduced to 3 seats with 8 being needed for official party status. Where this gets juicy is that the NDP picked up virtually all their seats to form the Opposition - a party which has O history in Quebec, no provincial wing there, and have only ever elected 1 MP from there in their party's entire history!! The Green Party finally make party history through party leader Elizabeth May capturing a seat in BC.
