Sadly, this nonsense happened a few blocks from where I work. It was weird having the NRA convention in town, but I personally didn't mind all that much.
I did see some dude at the zoo wearing his 2nd Amendment shirt, which noted that "the beauty of the 2nd Amendment is that you don't have to use it until they try to take it from you". I've encountered this logic that the right to bear arms protects the people from an overreaching government but I'm here to tell you...THAT'S FUCKING STUPID! The #1 thing that will determine whether government can oppress the people is how the government itself divides along that issue. If the military is for it, then oppression it is. If military against it, then nothing happens or a coup does. If military divides, you get civil war. None of that has squat to do with civilians.
Anyway, I noted the shirt and saw this guy quite a few times, but most notable was in the bathroom, where he berated his little boy for not being able to wash his own hands or "do anything for yourself" (at this point I'm wondering how much we should trust him to really convey important lessons about gun safety...) and for the fact that he brought his daughter into the men's room and had her hang out near the urinals to view the zoo's collection of pork. As the father of a three year old daughter, I can understand that you sometimes have to take them in to the men's room to go (as opposed to me barreling into the ladies room...), but the guy was there with a woman (easy to find her, despite the camo) so why couldn't she watch the girl or take her to ladies' room?
So, anyway, this dude's a fool, but I won't extrapolate that out to apply to all the convention attendees. Where I will judge them, though, is in how they sell their group. Gun rights aren't inherently a conservative/liberal issue, though they've become one, and you could absolutely have a convention dedicated to gun rights without making it an overall conservative or liberal event. I'm sure there are many liberal gun owners who also cherish this liberty...but they would have to be completely turned off by an event like this. What does a civil liberty have to do with torture, terrorism, Christianity, or any number of the other things that seem to divide (or are used to divide) conservative from liberal. Don't give me a convention where you show me how conservative it is to love guns; give me a convention that shows me why it's in the interest of all Americans, most especially those who aren't in abundant attendance. But this is how they sell themselves and, as the preeminent gun rights organization, it will likely lead to the increasing polarization on this issue.
