What a speech. My grandma used to talk about how scary those weeks were. Her and the rest of the family(and MANY others) thought the world was about to end. I think JFK is overrated in general and wasn't even in office long enough to achieve many things but he deserves to be lumped in with the greats based on his handling of this crisis alone.

I've read several books on this crisis. The Soviets were a cunt hair away from being annihilated. Crazy how the so called "missile gap" was actually lopsided in our favor and we had a legitimate shot at taking them out with worst case scenario a couple US cities being hit. Would have been horrific no doubt but I can see why he was able to talk so tough during this crisis when he knew it wasn't a bluff.

The disaster on the US side wouldn't have been in Russia. It would have been Cuba. Talks of a Cuba invasion without knowing tactical nukes would have been raining down on our troops.

The world is lucky Kruschev blinked.

I sometimes speculate what would happen if somebody other than USSR or the US started a war. Say another revival in Germany or something like that. Would it come to nukes? If US and Russian interesert weren't directly threatened?

We might see something similar today with Putin. When Hitler attacked Poland he did so thinking the big powers wouldn't risk war over it. With nukes that game suddenly becomes much more viable. Is anyone risking war if Russia takes Turkey or maybe Poland? He is certainly appearing to grab with both hands lately.

I would say yes on both those countries. US the only country 100% likely to honor article 5. Poland has to be the line in the sand and I assume he has already been made aware of that behind closed doors. If not I think he'd already be there. Unfortunately nothing was stopping him from taking Ukraine. He'll probably get a free pass on it since Russia is a major player in the war on terror. I know sanctions are in place but they wont last forever. They'll quietly go away in a couple years.

Germany's rise is certainly something that has to be watched. They have no actual military power but if Russia and the US close their eyes, that can easily change.
