Can you imagine if I had a religious belief that suggested that the darker a person's skin, the more inherently evil they are? That skin color is, in fact, the outer representation of the inner desire and tendency to engage in sinful behavior? Thus, black people are naturally worse than the rest of us (and Michael Jackson got progressively better).
While being anti-gay isn't the only type of bigotry to find a ridiculous "ethical" basis, it is one of the few such bigotries that, in this country, hasn't been pushed to the margins (e.g. the Klan, using religion to justify their racial beliefs).
