Unfortunately we already have data to show this would be deadly. In fact we have examples of countries who chose immediate isolation/testing and those who took half measures. We know what the outcome is going to be because of that.

I think Trump's base is naturally skeptical of the legacy media, big tech and the Democrats after the past four years. This in conjunction with the covid-19 virus being treated in a completely different way than any viruses in past decades put a high bar in place. It is difficult for them to accept this as actually being worth the sheltering in place and putting the U.S. economy on hold for an undetermined length of time. The skepticism ranges from Federalism, blue/red urban/rural divide, to one-size-fits-all approaches and a media driven by sensationalist clicks for their livelihood. There is movement toward moderating this stance to accepting that the quarantine is necessary by Trump and right media peeps like Limbaugh going on. But once the flattening occurs and the death counts start to go down we will see increased clamor to reopen the country, or at least leave it up to the individual states.

Our Republican governor has done a solid job I feel.  We were locking down close on the heels of the East Coast, despite it not being nearly as bad here yet.  But our governor, despite serving under Pence, has never seemed like an ideologue to me.
