Since SLC and JMack frequent these parts, this seemed a valid topic.

Here's a starter:

Iowa gay marriage ban ruled unconstitutional
State supreme court says law violates rights of gays and lesbians

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling Friday finding that the state's same-sex marriage ban violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples, making Iowa the third state where gay marriage is legal.

In its decision, the court upheld a 2007 district court judge's ruling that the law violates the state constitution. It strikes the language from Iowa code limiting marriage to only between a man a woman.

"The court reaffirmed that a statute inconsistent with the Iowa constitution must be declared void even though it may be supported by strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion," said a summary of the ruling issued by the court.

1.) I've yet to hear an argument for HOW these pesky gays will adversely effect my marriage.

Good for them. I have no qualms about what any consenting adult does. Government should get out of "marriage" completely. Citizens have individual rights, not dual rights. People should be able to associate with whom they choose and shouldn't be penalized or rewarded for such association.

I used to be for civil unions, but when all the buzz around prop 8 started going around, I asked myself SLC's question.. and there is no good argument for it

Keith Olbermann's special comment which recently won an award sums it up perfectly.

My general feeling is that, if civil unions carry all the weight and rights of marriage, then it's silly to get caught up on a semantic difference.

Then again, this country has a long history of using otherwise harmless semantics as a way of demeaning certain groups of people, which has made me rethink that position. The real key is the rights. But I can see why the semantic issue would bother gay couples.

Using the word "Bro" clearly endangers the institute of "Dude."
