Got back from my honeymoon today. Had an incredible time, but god did I ever fucking miss home. It's been about 7 years since I've had a proper holiday (one longer than like three days) and it really reminded me why. Despite having an absolute blast, four days in I was craving my house, my city, the local accents, the shitty weather, the polluted air... if my wife lets me get away with it, I never want to go away for longer than four days again for the rest of my life!

Congrats again...now get back to work!

Shhhhhhh.... I still have three days left.

@Lynn

We spent the first four days in London, taking in some of the museums and staying in a very nice hotel. Then we had a small break in the countryside for a fabulous meal at a place called The Waterside Inn, which has incredible views over the river from the dining room (and from the terrace attached to our room). Then back to London to catch a show in the West End and finally onwards to The Dorchester (v.famous and luxurious and painfully expensive hotel) for the final night and another three-Michelin star meal (besides the actual wedding, this was probably the best day I've ever had).

Just off now to my parents to pick up all the wedding gifts they've been keeping for us. Very exciting!

In 6 days, 15 hours and approximately10 minutes, I'll be a married man. Can't wait. And hopefully I'll be more sober than I am now.

I quit smoking cold turkey about seven years ago, and found it quite easy. I still get cravings all the time, but my determination not to waste money on buying a pack and not to 'shame' myself by asking my mates if I can have one of theirs (I would feel like a dick) keeps me in line. I've maybe had two dozen cigs since I gave up, all of them in relatively unusual situations where it's just easier to smoke than say no. Last time would've been a party four years ago where a slightly mental but very persuasive woman who I'd only just met browbeat me into it while I was drunk.

Apparently, large riots are breaking out in London, and there are reports of it spreading to other cities???

That's really sad and crazy, what a crowd out of control can do. Feel badly for the people who live in that area.

Yeah, it's dominating the news over here. No sign of it stopping yet. The prime minister, who came back early from holiday, just gave a special press conference revealing all police leave has been cancelled and the number of policemen on the streets tonight (already much higher than usual) is going to be trebled.

Personally, I blame the media for being irresponsible. If they hadn't made such a big thing about the first night's unrest (which wasn't exactly crazy), I doubt very much we'd be seeing any of this now. It's just a bunch of dickheads copying what they've seen on TV.

Finished work early today on recommendations from the police. There was some rioting in Manchester last night, so they were advising businesses to close up from about 4pm onwards. Can't see there being any trouble to be honest - been raining relentlessly all afternoon, doubt any of the scumbags would be interested in going out in the weather. In other news, I'm getting all techd up. Began reading my first book on a Kindle yesterday, and today I got my first smartphone. The Kindle's awesome... the smartphone I'm less sure about.

26? You're one of the young ones around here then eh? Posted Image Posted Image

Found out that we've been given a week's extension for a report I originally had to have done by Thursday for uni. Won't be working on that for a couple of days now. Posted Image

I always loved extensions. I'd still do all the work in one sleep-deprived night, it would just give me the opportunity to put it off for a couple of weeks.

I think that's why I left uni with a shit grade...

It's my birthday today. Got the day off work, but nobody to spend it with, so I went out to a new restaurant on my own and got really, really drunk. There are worse ways to spend a birthday.

Happy birthday mister. How old are you now? Ready to retire?

God, I wish. 26.

The main advantage of getting drunk at lunchtime is that I've got time to get drunk all over again this evening. Good times.

Thanks for the kind wishes!

The Grand National today, the day when people who never bet - like me - decide to go ahead and do it. Don't Push It to win! Posted Image

My eight-year barren streak continues. Had Oscar Time each way, but didn't win enough to cover even half of my bets.

My brother on the hand won £120. Lucky bastard.

Adaddon: On the Foodnet Work's "worst cook in world" series they posted some videos about knife skills. As old as I am, I didn't know the proper way to dice an onion or slice carrots. Forget Juliann cuts....I'd lose my fingers. After watching those videos, though, I'm lusting after a good set of knifes as well.

Anthony Bourdain had a good bit about knives in Kitchen Confidential. He basically said big knife sets are pointless, and all you really need to do is invest in a good cook's knife - because you can do pretty much everything with that. If you do some filleting/butchery, then get the appropriate boning knife too. But that's pretty much all you need.

After some reading around and pricing up, I'm hoping to get this:

I went to donate blood for the first time today, and after filling in all the forms and having my finger pricked to check for iron content, I get told that my veins are too thin to give blood. Didn't even know that was possible.

Well I just turned down a nepotism request tonight, so it doesn't look good! And yeah, I love to cook. Very happy to teach myself for now using books and TV, but I reckon I'll go on a cookery course one day. Need to learn some serious knife skills when/if someone buys me the Global knives I've put on my wedding gift list (although Lisa, if you do come and visit, I'm totally holding you to that!) Just watch the 'What are you eating' thread when I'm back from my honeymoon and need to show off about all the three-Michelin star restaurants I've been to.

Cheers guys. Been a tough few weeks - not just football-wise - so it's nice to get some good news for a change. And Zimbochick, when you're the boss, you don't need to buy the drinks! I've now got 60 people who'll be wanting to get on my good side!! Got to have some perks!

Would love to see a different side to the US. Have done New York and Washington, but somewhere like Maui or the deep south - places which seem to have a more distinct personality - would be cool.

You mean you want to go places with FRIENDLY people? Posted Image

Hawaii is a trip. Tons of Japanese tourists at Pearl Harbor...always seemed weird to me. But it's all fuckin' gorgeous.

New York wasn't bad - if you compare it with London. Washington was actually really friendly, but that might just be because we shared a hotel with some national congress of gospel singers - every one of them was awesome. But yeah, in the friendliness stakes, none of them held a candle to the folk we met in Canada on the same trip.

Zimbo - definitely plan to go to South Africa one day and do a bit of a wine tour. The country's a big favourite among my fiance's family. 2021 might be a good year for it - can combine it with a Lions Tour, which is something I've always wanted to do.

Learned a lesson today - never book a holiday around a restaurant. Had planned to spend the first two nights of my honeymoon in a place called Bray, specifically so I can go to one of the three-star Michelin restaurants there. Hotel already booked. And I ring up first thing this morning, the earliest possible date that I could make the reservation for, and they tell me they're fucking closed for a private party! Grrrr. Time to do some replanning.

Thanks guys. Yeah, having the coffin carried in is very dignified I think. It was suggested we might not be able to on 'health and safety grounds', but my dad wasn't having any of that. When my grandad (on the other side) died a few years back, my grandma asked for him to be brought into church on a trolly instead (I think she was scared we'd drop him or something). It wasn't very nice at all!
