I'm confused on this whole "free speech" fiasco.  I don't see the moral obligation for any business to allow openly racist messages on their forum.  If you want to shout "white power" or use the "N" word, no one is obliged to let them.  If for no other reason than nothing positive can come from contributions like that to any discussion.  But this nonsense where if you express an unpopular, but informed opinion, or calling out people who spreading misinformation or lies, and are punished for it, that's horse shit.

I've yet to find many situations where an informed opinion is penalized for being expressed, and when it is, anyone with half a brain cell recognizes why.  Trump's popularity is a direct response to the notion you can silence discussion with emotional attacks and labeling someone a racist or a bigot.

It's because most people have no idea what a civil liberty is.  They think that freedom of speech means being able to say whatever the fuck you want without consequences, which is not the case.  As I'm sure you 100% know (so this comment is for those that don't), freedom of speech is a restriction on the government's power to restrict or punish your speech, which is assumed to be yours as a natural right.  Barring the removal of your tongue, government can't prevent you from speaking freely, it can only punish it after the fact.  So, civil liberties protect those rights we assume are natural to mankind.

That traditional definition is important.  I also think that we do need to consider the free speech implications of how our speech is penalized by other entities.  If someone goes to a 49ers game and holds up a sign bashing Kaepernick and calling him the N-word, should the NFL remove that person?  Yeah, absolutely.  They're selling a product and that guy is toxic to their product.  Where I have greater problems is with employers who cruise their employees facebook pages and fire them because they smoked a joint or got pass-out drunk and had a pic posted.  I'm not sure that most people would care enough to boycott a business because someone who works there likes to party on the weekend, nor do I think a business needs to have its fingers in our personal lives.  While government may be the biggest threat to speech, in practical terms much damage is done by private groups.

So, in sum:

I'm ok with a private entity not allowing you to use their forum for your acts of speech or expression.  It's theirs and you have no right to use it how YOU want.

I'm NOT ok with private entities punishing your free expression/speech.  I would make exceptions for illegal activity, though I think they would be better off not worrying about marijuana.  Otherwise, you shouldn't be fired (or not hired) for what you do in your personal life.  If you get drunk and have abortions every weekend (is that possible? :D ) it's generally none of your employers business.  I don't care if you post it.  If it was legal when you did it they have no business canning you for it.

I would say the biggest factor with Twitter is uneven enforcement. Groups (conservatives) feel they are being policed, censored, shadow banned, kicked off the platform more than others committing the same infractions.

This is the free market. GAB was created to serve a population segment that felt it was being ill served by the status quo. Like when FOX News was created. Viewers felt unserved by the media that existed prior and the subsequent yearly top news network ratings for FOX News show this to be true.

GAB has rules but is designed that censoring is up to the individual user. No messy weighing in and uneven enforcement. This will appeal to some and others will not care.

The owners of these products can police content however they want.

We have freedom of speech but not freedom from consequences. And no one is forced to listen to someone they don't want to hear. I prefer the let the user decide model as opposed to some biased or inconsistent authority setup.

I don't get things like this.  Can you not appreciate someone's work if you disagree with them on an issue?  Unless the issues themselves are in some way related to their work, why should it matter?  Hell, if Paul Ryan can listen to Rage Against the Machine, the four or five Trumpers who can read should be able to enjoy Harry Potter.

Made a quick vist to Gab...took about five seconds to find a George Soros conspiracy theory, links to infowars, and people worried about the white race.

I went to stormfront a month ago to see what all the fuss was about.  Anyone who goes there and thinks they've found enlightenment wasn't capable of being a productive person in the first place.  I clicked two threads before I got bored.  Inane ramblings from idiots with a swastika tattooed on their neck, confused why they have a hard time finding work.

Stormfront owns "martinlutherking.org" and the librarians use it in my classes to demonstrate why you need to be careful with your sources.
