It's interesting you post this, because I was just saying what a dick I thought Bill was with this guy. He seemed out of sorts and much more snarky than he usually is, in particular with this guy. I actually agree with him here though.

Well, I think Maher is making an excellent point. Much like after Sandy Hook, how Al Franken rushed to the podium to show his support for the mentally ill and remind everyone that not everyone who is nuts is dangerous, the same bullshit is going on from the left on Boston. As soon as it happened, an article comes out hoping the bombers are white. Are 99% of Muslims peaceful, yes. But they kind of have a monopoly on terrorism. And like Maher says, most muslims world wide kind of give tacit consent if one of their extremist do something. Rather than kid one's self and call Islam a religion of peace, be honest about what it is. Yes there are other drivers in the middle east, but you can't tell me the last time you heard of a Jew trying to blow up a plane or group of people. You can't show me a Buddhist, Pagan or yes - even Christian. And if you scour and find one example, it's so rare it's not worth a thought. If you think of the most right wing, absurd/extremist Christian group on earth, you probably come to Fred Phelps. And that asshat is despised by 99.9% of not only Americans, but Christians too. That isn't true with islam. So rather than spending all this time reminding everyone that most muslims aren't going to blow you up, maybe we should be honest and recognize it's a different culture completely at odds with the notions of democracy and an egalitarian society.

Think there's an interesting general point in this video which I think about often. Information is power - so I gather as much as possible and try to filter it, but the more information you are exposed to, the more depressing and futile everything can seem. I think most of us here have pretty much grown up in the non-internet/lots of internet cross over time. The next generation isn't going to understand what a world without it was like and the previous generation is bemused by it - I have no idea what my point is really, I think we are going to see ever accelerating changes in what society/community means.
