Then, today I learn of Richard Leakey's passing. He was the son of Louis and Mary Leakey who published pioneering studies on hominid evolution, including the Homo lineage. Their son, Richard, was well known(though not as well respected, initially) in the paleoanthropological sciences. One of his classics, "Origins", has been on my bookshelf for over 40 years. RIP

I was going to post something about E.O. Wilson's passing the other day, but he isn't really as well known among the public as someone like Attenborough, so I didn't. He is well known though to biologists/naturalists. He was a professor of evolutionary biology at Harvard for years, and is the father of sociobiology. He died the day after Christmas. RIP

I definitely know of EO Wilson. I assign a bit of Consilience in one of my classes.

May he always be served with mashed potatoes and eaten by the dashboard lights.

I had really been getting into them lately. Of course youtube will keep in you whatever rabbit hole you go down, so I had seen plenty of interviews and shows over the last couple of months. Seemed like a solid guy all around. Very sad. RIP.
Edit: Of course all the anti vax nuts are saying it's from the "jab."

It was my niece’s bullshit that convinced her daughter not to vax. Two of her kids got the shot anyway; they’re fine. One will likely die. I’m so fucking mad I could scream.

That is maddening, so sorry to hear that. 19 is so young.
It's amazing how different our realities can be. I still wear a mask in stores and around people right now. If the number of infections per 100k gets lower and/or the infection rate, then I will reassess after another month. That may still be too extreme for others who are triple vaxxed etc. But the idea that people will still die of covid because they aren't vaccinated, or will wear a mask just seems nuts to me.

Yep. Brother just called to let me know she is near the end. It will be his second grandchild that has died. He’s putting up a stoic front for his kids/grandkids, but it is tearing him up.
That's so awful...so sorry man.

Thanks, guy. She is fighting like hell, but the docs said she's in multiple organ failure and don't expect her to make it much longer. What's really fucked up is that she was the happy-go-lucky kid. Always upbeat, almost hyper. She was the one that supervised the little ones at holiday dinners... or maybe she let them know that the old fuckers were old codgers- avoid them??? IDK, but she was a kind person, and she was probably right.
What's also fucked up is that that is what I know of Karlia, I know she was a Tar Heels fan, and a that she was a good kid.
Most frustrating, though, is that this have didn't have to happen. Such a sweet child.
