#55506 The all new extra sticky book thread

Posted by Abaddon on 21 November 2011 - 02:24 PM in Main

Getting through books quite quickly lately, which I think is down to my Kindle. Finished Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy, which was excellent from start to finish, then moved on to The Hunger Games, which was merely OK. An easy read and entertaining enough, but it was very superficial and felt like a big rip-off. Certainly there's nothing here that wasn't done 100 times better in The Running Man or Battle Royale - both of which it seems to copy liberally. I'll probably check out the sequels but not for a while. Right now I'm reading The Long Walk by Stephen King, which I'm really enjoying. It's got an amazing and terrifying concept, which makes me feel incredibly conscious of my legs and feet every time I pick it up.

26? You're one of the young ones around here then eh? Posted Image Posted Image

Found out that we've been given a week's extension for a report I originally had to have done by Thursday for uni. Won't be working on that for a couple of days now. Posted Image

I always loved extensions. I'd still do all the work in one sleep-deprived night, it would just give me the opportunity to put it off for a couple of weeks.

I think that's why I left uni with a shit grade...

It's my birthday today. Got the day off work, but nobody to spend it with, so I went out to a new restaurant on my own and got really, really drunk. There are worse ways to spend a birthday.

Happy birthday mister. How old are you now? Ready to retire?

God, I wish. 26.

The main advantage of getting drunk at lunchtime is that I've got time to get drunk all over again this evening. Good times.

Thanks for the kind wishes!

My old laptop broke last week and today my new one arrived. Nothing fancy, but I'm enjoying it so far. Been five years or so since I had a brand new computer (last laptop was a refurb).

No way man...Islay is where it's at!

I just did a blog post about it on Tuesday. Just doesn't work for me. Too harsh for my tastebuds. Reckon I might grow to like it as I get older and my tastes change.

Had a great lamb and potato pie tonight, made by my wife's grandma.

I was at that match. Fucking brutal. Result really flattered City. We played worse than I'd ever seen us, and even then the worst it should've been is 3-1. We threw our toys out of the pram at the end - it was like if we were going to lose, we were determined to lose as badly as we could. Fergie summed it up: "Suicidal football." That said, they really showed us up in the centre and hammered home how badly we need some quality central midfielders. The gulf in quality between the hapless Anderson and Fletcher and Silva was huge. He basically just walked through them and the defence and did whatever he wanted.

Whisky tasting was very interesting. I enjoy it, but I'm very much a novice, so I was treating it as an opportunity to decide precisely what I like. Speyside and Highland seemed to have the ones most to my tastes, with Islay not at all up my street. I really disliked all the peated stuff I tried. But loved the Kavalan whisky from Taiwan. Great chance to try some very expensive whisky anyway. Probably not going to sample many £150+ bottles in the near future.

World War Z could've been interesting if they'd stuck to the documentary format of the book. Instead, it looks like they're just going to make it into a standard zombie movie. Shame.

Food festivals are awesome. Went to a wine festival as part of it last week, and in a couple of hours I'm at a whisky festival. Good times.

Local food festival taking place where I am at the moment and I'm finding myself going down every day. Eaten way too much cheese in the last few days! Tonight I had a Manchester Egg, a recently invented version of a Scotch Egg. It's basically a pickled egg, wrapped in a blend of sausage and black pudding, and breaded. Awesome, it was.

Wales v Ireland was a great game. England v France was diabolical. Should be heading for a Wales v New Zealand final. Wales are playing great, but it won't be enough against the All Blacks (who I expect to walk over Australia).

Looks like he'll get a three-match ban at least. That'll see him miss the whole tournament then...

More sloppyness in the last two games. Basel had way too many chances against us tonight and we were lucky to get away with the 3-3 draw. Still looking great going forwards, but poor on the back foot. Not controlling things in central midfield and the defence aren't gelling because we have a different line up each week. It's mostly down to injuries, but it's still pretty worrying. I suppose we should be thankful that there aren't any other good teams in the Premier League this season and Europe's weak outside of Barca. Thought City losing to Bayern 2-0 was pretty funny.

Enjoyed watching Bobby Fischer Against The World yesterday. Not a particularly great documentary, but he's a fascinating character and they had lots of great footage. I'm utterly useless at chess, yet the people who play it at the highest level fascinate me.

Yeah - fun game, but a lot of crap in there. Glad we came through it alright. We won't always get away with playing so sloppy.

The Ireland-Australia match was great. I was rooting for the underdogs. Of course that win could mean we end up playing Ireland in the semi-finals. If we get that far that is - if we keep playing so shit, there's a decent chance we won't.

#52130 The all new extra sticky book thread

Posted by Abaddon on 21 September 2011 - 02:21 PM in Main

Finished The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie last week. Loved it, although you could tell it was very much the first book of a trilogy. The plot advances so little it almost felt like a prologue. I didn't get gripped by it, which is probably why it took me a couple of months to read it, but I still had a lot of fun. Moved straight on to the sequel, Before They Are Hanged. I want to see what happens to these characters!

I'm in love with my new Le Creuset casserole. Had lot of fun with it in the last couple of days cooking one-pot meals which seem to come out a thousand times better than they used to (the washing up after is a million times better as well). Honey mustard chicken thighs with parsnips last night, and mustard apple pork chops tonight. There's something very satisfying about making something that requires minimal effort but still comes out great.
