Run into an issue with my deep-fat fryer - the handle on the basket's broken, which pretty much puts it out of action. Suppose it's not too big a deal to replace it. But it means no more chips until it's sorted out.

I signed up to Twitter quite recently (@FTTBYD). Enjoying it more than I thought I would, although it going down all the time is quite annoying.

Silvio Dante. There's a documentary, I think, on one of the DVD boxsets where they discuss the music of the show. Van Zandt had quite a lot of input.

Just started rewatching The Sopranos again. Have seen it many times, but I don't think I'll ever tire of it. Putting it on is like being reunited with old friends.

Decent start to the tournament - Wales v South Africa was very entertaining and as long as there's one good match each round, I'm happy. England were terrible against Argentina. Got away with one there. Still, we're not the only team to have got off to a poor start. Australia are probably the only ones out of the big teams that didn't have much of a stutter. The All Blacks won comfortably, but they didn't impress.

Always marinate when I use the barbecue. When I use the grillet, I generally don't - but that's probably because I'm normally just knocking up a quick meal and I don't have the time. Been eating like a king this weekend. Charcuterie and quality bread and confit duck and foie gras and lots of nice wine. Just got done with very good roast chicken dinner.

The bone definitely adds more flavour. Compare the tenderloin on a porterhouse to a fillet mignon and you should be able to tell the difference. I love rib-eye steak, but when I had it on the bone at an extremely good steakhouse, it was almost a little too intense in flavour for me. Friday tends to be steak night in my house. Tonight we had sirloin - according to Wikipedia, that's around a short loin in US butchery - and very enjoyable it was too! Served with skin-on, twice-fried chips and some mildly garlicked mushrooms.

Bone in ribeye this evening with the Missus, taters n salad.

Sounds awesome.

I've been laid out with a stomach bug for the last few days, but feeling better today. Shepherd's pie tonight.

Sons Of Anarchy was a pretty solid premier last night.

Yeah - I enjoyed it. Great to have it back. Think it'll be a good season.

Am off work sick, so I watched The Fighter today. Very good. Out of the Best Picture nominations I've seen from the last Oscars, I preferred it to The King's Speech, Inception and The Social Network. But I didn't like it as much as Toy Story 3.

The Stand is one of those books I'm worried might not hold up for me, so I'm scared to revisit it. 10 years ago I would've said it was the best book ever. But I was reading It recently and it gave me some doubts. I just think King can be really long-winded and I find I don't have the patience for it like I used to. I stopped It half way through because I was bored - not with the story, but with the chapters and chapters of tedium that were inserted in between. He just goes into way too much detail on some stuff. I did the same thing with Salem's Lot when I tried to re-read that. The only King books I wouldn't mind reading again are The Running Man, which I think is brilliant and a hugely underrated bit of sci-fi (why they don't make a faithful film adaptation, I'll never know), and Different Seasons. I find I much prefer his shorter stuff these days.

Watched How To Train Your Dragon last night. Loved it way more than expected. Tons of fun.

Yeah, it was good. Took my daughter to see it at the cinema when it came out.

I think if I'd seen it aged six, it would've become my favourite film.

Did you ever finish a book thinking it was the best book you've ever read, then you re-read it several decades later and wonder what on earth you ever saw in that book?

Not so bad as to wonder what I saw in it, but some stuff has fallen dramatically in my estimation. Used to love Isaac Asimov when I was around 12, but when I re-read my favourite Foundation series last year it wasn't half as great as a I remembered. Still entertaining stories, packed with amazing ideas, but written by someone who can't write very well. Every single character, man or woman, spoke with the same voice.

Same thing's happened with a few other sci-fi books I read as a kid. I'm almost worried to go back now in case they don't hold up.

Here are my favourites that I'm sure won't fall down any time soon:

Dune - Frank Herbert
I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
1984 - George Orwell
Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk - Legs McNeil, Gillian McCain

Really looking forward to it. Little bit gutted I'll miss some fun games due to work (New Zealand-Japan, for example), but all England's matches are on the weekend so that's OK. Expecting New Zealand to walk the entire tournament.

I saw Food Inc the other day, found it quite annoying and preachy as a documentary, but it was interesting enough. I knew all the production practices, but had no idea about the size of some of these companies in the US and the sheer scale of their operations. Crazy to think about the power they wield. Just finished watching Super, an incredibly violent, black comedy about a man who becomes a superhero. It's got Kevin Bacon and Ellen Page in it, and it was awesome. I've not seen Kick-Ass, but when it comes to slightly whacky takes on superhero stories, I can't imagine it coming close to this good.

...but I refuse to believe it's as bad as animal rights activists make out. ...Only difference is that most cows aren't treated like royalty like the majority of foie gras ducks and geese.

This video didn't strike me as though the ducks were being treated like royalty.

Sure - but is that the whole industry? I don't think so. Every sector of the farming industry has abuses like that. Can't tarnish all the farmers with the same brush.

Haha - I meant in England. I don't like to talk about that lot anymore... This footballer slavery shit they've got going on in South America is ridiculous. FIFA need to put an end to it.

I'm not sure about how cruel it is. Seen and read quite a few things over the years rubbishing it. I've got a link to one such video on the blog. I'm sure a lot is positive propaganda on the side of the foie gras industry, but I refuse to believe it's as bad as animal rights activists make out. The logic's quite simple - if you're cruel to an animal, it's going to get distressed and it won't produce good food. I wouldn't say it's any crueler than artificially inseminating a cow to be honest, given the biology of birds (just watch the vid). Only difference is that most cows aren't treated like royalty like the majority of foie gras ducks and geese.

Enjoyed the game last night. There was a period of about 25 minutes in the second half where I thought we were phenomenal. More like that and nobody will be able to touch us this season.
