Sheared a wrist pin in my shift tower. Ford told me that they didn't carry just the pin, but they would sell me a new tower. Well, fuck that! Decided to replace the pin with a 4mm bolt. It was late, and the only thing I could find was a #7; knew it needed to be a #12, but what the fuck; it was late and I needed to put it back together.
I figured I would find a bolt with the proper hardness and replace it later(It's not the difficult to remove the tower from the tranny).
A month goes by and I'm thinking I need to replace the bolt. A month later I'm thinking I better get it done, soon!
Then, it sheared. The bolt fell into the bottom of the tranny, grabbed a ring gear, and busted the fucking casing.
I had to drop the whole fucking front end to get the SOB out; either that, or pull the motor. Got it done, though(welded the case), and saved a fortune doing it.

Transmissions were never my thing. Seemed like brain surgery to me. I've dropped plenty of pans, changed filters etc. But have never taken one out and repaired. I probably could swap one out of 4 banger if I had to though.
Over the last year have finally started to let other people work on my cars. Although my wife's car needs brakes now, which is a simple job, and I'd hate to pay 500 for it. These days though...time is a luxury. It's just easier to pay and go.

That was the first standard shift I have torn down. I've done several automatics, and difference was night and day... very simple. The hardest thing was separating the differential from the tranny.
Puts some brakes on a Subaru for a friend of my daughter a few months ago. Those fucking things have those calipers that have to be shimmed. The only other time I had seen that was on a Pininfarina I had back in the 80s. Nice car, but weird design(side draft carbs).
Is there a bigger racket than auto repair? But I know nothing about doing it, so I just bleed money.
Bigger racket??? Absolutely-- heating and air contractors are the worse.
Cars are a lot less complex than they seem; basically fuel, air, and fire for the motors. The drivetrain is pretty straight forward and usually robust enough that it doesn't fail, often.
One of the best things you can buy for your vehicle is a service manual. You can pickup a Haynes manual for most vehicles for around $20. Get one! Even if you don't work on your own vehicle, it has a good trouble shooting section so when you talk to your mechanic, you can sound like you know what you're talking about even if you don't.

I despise contractors. Any kind, doesn't matter what they specialize in. I also do most house work myself, but because of time limitations have started to hire out smaller jobs. What an enormous PITA, and half these idiots don't even show up for the appointment. I did my kitchen on my own. This kitchen with a contractor would have been $$$$. But doing it myself it cost less than the price of the cabinets I was quoted at Home Depot for everything. I also think that installing cabinets is an easy DIY job to be honest, and fun. So kitchen for sure I'd always do. My sister in law still has her contractor working on her kitchen...was supposed to be done by Christmas.
I agree on cars. The fundamentals are easy to understand, and even if you don't work on them yourself, knowing will save you money. I have two mechanics I trust. I always ask questions that I already know the answer to, just to see what they say. I was actually in college when I became so angry at a mechanic I knew was ripping me off (175 bucks was a ton of money then) that I enrolled in the auto mechanic program the next semester at our community college. When I was done with that, I started back with my undergrad stuff.

Fuck, I'm getting old. Daughter's CV joint has been clicking for a while and she has been on me to fix it. Finally got around to swapping it out for a new one. It whipped my ass! I'm sore as shit. Also, who the fuck uses Loctite on front end assemblies? You should have to have some kind of license to buy that shit. I had to take a fucking torch to the camber bolts...after trying a 650lb impact wrench!!!
Anyway, sore as shit, tonight, and pissed.
