MADISON, Wis. — Republicans in the state Senate plan to pass a bill stripping public employees of their collective bargaining rights by removing that piece from Gov. Scott Walker's budget bill, a GOP source told NBC News on Wednesday afternoon.
The source, a moderate Republican involved in negotiations, told NBC's Mike Taibbi that the vote would take place at 6 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET).
Two Democratic state senators also said they believed Republicans planned to pass that part of the budget bill. Senate Republican leaders weren't saying why they hastily created a conference committee that's meeting later Wednesday night.
All 14 Senate Democrats have left the state to prevent quorum on the overall budget bill. It takes at least 20 senators to take up any budget bill.
But not all parts of Walker's proposal are budget-related.
Democratic Sen. Bob Jauch says he thinks Republicans plan to "ram through" parts of the bill that take away collective bargaining rights but that don't cost any money. Sen. Jon Erpenbach says he thinks they will do anything they can to weaken public unions with or without Democrats there.
If the Senate passes the collective bargaining provisions as a stand-alone bill, that stand-alone bill would have to be approved by the state Assembly before it could become law.

My co-worker said and I quote "I think the republicans are planning something diabolical".
I would have to agree.
In general, I would describe the systematic destruction of the working middle class to fund richie rich tax cuts as diabolical. This stunt is just one iteration of it.

I am beyond disgusted. As I said on facebook, I can't wait until the next election because it's going to be a wonderful doozy. I'm hyped, big time & I have been since this started. I hope it continues throughout.

We CANNOT balance our budget until all public sector jobs are performed by slave children. Therefore, I encourage the legislature to take up the "Temple of Doom Act".
hahahahahaha! I'm totally stealing that.

A party that was once known for ‘conservatism’ -- that is, the thoughtful preservation of the best traditions, combined with a skepticism towards utopian reformists -- has become far more ideologically absolutist than its opponents. To apply the label ‘conservative’ to someone who wants to upend laws and institutions all at once, just because, is to do violence to language. Conservatives conserve; it’s what they do. These people destroy, in the expectation that the new thing that emerges will somehow justify the destruction. They would almost have an argument, if they ever bothered to specify what the new thing would be.
