Van Halen 2008 Tour Rider

NOVEMBER 26--While Van Halen no longer demands the provision of strippers and controlled substances backstage, the band's most recent concert rider still contains a few gems. The document, excerpted below, covers Van Halen's 2008 U.S. tour, which concluded about five months ago. For probably the first time in rock history, the Van Halen rider specified that a "study room" be set up backstage for a musician and his tutor (in this case, bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, who was 16 when the tour launched). Each band member got his own dressing room, according to the rider, which notes that lead singer David Lee Roth's abode had to be free of any floor covering since, "Mr. Roth practices martial arts in his dressing room, and in order to do this there can be no rugs or carpeting of any sort." Additionally, Diamond Dave's dwelling "SHOULD BE AS FAR AWAY FROM" dressing rooms occupied by bandmates Wolfgang, Alex, and Eddie Van Halen. The rider does not explain why Roth needed the separation, but considering his rocky history with the band, space is likely a good thing. While no alcohol is stocked in the individual dressing rooms (it's all Red Bull, Gatorade, fresh fruit, and Japanese Apple Pears), Eddie's onstage cooler contained "mini bottles" of "Gallo Twin Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (red & white label, red cap)." A four-pack of the low-rent Gallo libation retails for $4.99. The band's 2007-2008 tour was delayed when the guitarist reportedly entered rehab in March 2007 for treatment of alcohol abuse. Though it carries a December 2007 date, the rider below was provided to a venue where Van Halen performed in May 2008. (7 pages)

I have no qualms about the "rock n' roll lifestyle" or any of that crazy (or not so crazy) backstage shit.

But if you're a drunk and your KID is on tour with you...that's messed up. So for the purpose of family health and stability, here's hoping EVH can keep it under control.

"It's been a while since I reached out to one of my best sources of Van Halen info over the years, but it had to be done. And I got the information I was hoping for - independent confirmation from a long time source I trust that Van Halen are indeed working towards finishing recording of a long awaited new studio album with David Lee Roth, set for release sometime in the first half of 2011. "A single is slated for release before the end of this year, but exact timing still remains very much up in the air. I'm told the relationship between Eddie and Dave remains as complex as ever, but there is a definite desire to get a new record completed." PlanetRock.com.

Sounds awesome, but what about Michael Anthony?!? He needs to be there, too.

There's a bunch of guitar players who have supposedly heard some material including Zakk, Steve Stevens(?), John 5 and maybe Dweezil? Anyway, I'm sure material is being developed - whether we will ever hear it is another matter.

No idea, I didn't get that far. It's somewhere on vhforums.com but wasn't obvious to me where it was.

The news that Van Halen is recording its first studio album in twelve years with original lead singer David Lee Roth may have fans wanting to, well, jump. It has certainly been a long wait since 1998's "Van Halen III." Speculation of a recorded reunion has been thrown around since 2008, when Van Halen completed a successful reunion tour that featured original frontman David Lee Roth with the band for the first time since the 1984 Tour (plus a brief appearance at the 1996 MTV Music Awards)..

That much-anticipated new album has now been confirmed: Guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, released a statement saying, "[Van Halen] is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011.".

If that wasn't enough good news for VH fans, the new album is expected to be accompanied by a world tour..

Some fans, however, may still be disappointed considering that a full reunion of the original lineup remains so elusive. .

It's been a tumultuous partnership, to say the least, for Van Halen and Roth over the years. It's a relationship that has left fans with a sense of frustration that continues today. The history of the band plays out almost as a bad soap opera. It started in 1985 when, after 13 years, clashing egos led to the departure of Roth -- who went on to a semi-successful solo career -- and the beginning of a new era for Van Halen: new lead singer Sammy Hagar..

The band continued to flourish with Hagar as the lead - a rare feat for a band to lose such a key member and retain its relevance -- with some fans even preferring the more rocking style of Hagar over the flamboyant glam act of David Lee Roth. In 1996, Roth returned to record two songs with Van Halen for a greatest hits compilation. He was soon replaced (again), this time by former Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone, who lasted all of one album, Van Halen's last. (The band did reunite with Hagar for a 2003 tour.).

When David Lee Roth returned to Van Halen for his first full tour since the "1984" album, fans were joyous to finally see a reunion of the four original members. Well, like pretty much everything else involving the band, nothing's ever easy - the full reunion never happened. As David Lee Roth returned, longtime bassist Michael Anthony was passed over in favor of Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang. Wolfgang will be the bassist on the new album as well. Anthony is currently the bassist for Chickenfoot, whose lead singer is, of course, Sammy Hagar. .

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this never materializes into anything substantial. I'll go as far as saying we don't even hear one song, let alone an entire album.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, released a typically vague and short statement today, "[Van Halen] is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011."

And news is all over Australian media about a first quarter album release and tour: "Van Halen are hotly tipped to be doing a tour of Australia next year. And we're talking the 'real' Van Halen including the jumping David Lee Roth on vocals and six-string god Eddie Van Halen. Our music reporter Nui Te Koha gave us the rocking news this morning. "Big, big rumour. Van Halen with David Lee Roth, early next year." The band's new album due out in March next year is their first with singer David Lee Roth in 25 years and "the tour will follow shortly after that".
Eddie Van Halen told US Rolling Stone last year that his band's reunion tour through America in 2008 was a massive success. They played 74 shows and the tour ended up making $US93 million. "We are a band,” said Eddie Van Halen. “We had a lot of fun – Dave was a blast. I'm looking forward to getting on it."
