For what it's worth, Brenda Lee is the first show I ever attended. I think it was 1966

Rob's doing Hawaii again for the holidays, this time she's in Maui. Let's see if she will send an image???

I guess I'm an old fucker. I moved into a retirement community. At first, I didn't like the ideal, but after checking it out, I kind of liked it. They have a lot of amenities that I don't use, but I'm the young guy, there(have to be 62 to live there), so I seem to garner a lot of attention.

Now, I'm going to impress a bunch of them by playing some Brenda Lee using a blue tooth speaker. Seriously.

Oh, it has a "check in" button that you have to press between 4:00am and 4:00 pm or they come to your door(I guess they don't want us stinking up the place after we die). Also, has the "help me I've fallen" cords to pull in the rooms.

Nice location, though.

^^^ should've mentioned something about tannins from setting in a barrel for 15 years. That would've really pissed them off.

#82903 Drunk thread

Posted by Its Cousin on 16 December 2023 - 06:44 PM in Main

I guess tonight is the night. I went to the liquor store and the parking lot was full. Well, fuck that! I'm not walking half a block, so I decided to head to the grocery store around the corner to pick up my favorite libation. Get there and the line was out the door. Well, shit! Figured I would join the line since it seemed to be moving fairly fast.

I thought that maybe they were checking IDs at the door(this store is on campus and the liquor dept. has its own separate entrance). After making it inside, people were still queing up, so I finally ask if anyone knew why we were waiting in a line. Turns out they were having a lottery for an upcoming release of Pappy van Winkle. If you don't know, Pappy is a highly sought after bourbon that's near impossible to find, so the best way of obtaining a bottle is to put your name in a lottery for any up coming releases.

Sometimes, I hate how popular bourbon has become... I use to be able to pick a bottle of 15 year old Pappy for $16, now it's a hundred if you can get it, or pay 4 or 5 times that from what is essentially a scalper.

When informed the line was for the Pappy lottery, I responded "fuck that, I don't care for wheaters, anyway". Grabbed a bottle of Four Roses that was on display(it was one of those Christmas deals they always have this time of year with something thrown in the box like a tumbler or something- this one had a silicon mold for making rose-shaped ice cubes), and got the hell out of there.

I think some of them were actually offended that someone wouldn't like Pappy, but I like a robust high-rye whiskey. Preferably made in Anderson Co., hence, the Four Roses. My intent was to grab a bottle 101º. Maybe, the next time.

Not really climate change, or is it... goddamn tornado warnings in the second week of December. It was two years ago, almost to the day(12/10/21), that tornadoes killed 75 people in the western part of the state.

Another good one that played the summer concert jams in the late 70s. Saw them a couple of times... they put on a hell of a show. Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. Ashamed they never got the recognition that other niche rock bands got later on... but I guess you have to die for that.

Kick ass guitar work: Montreal '79.

Wow! Forgot about these guys. They played typical 70s guitar rock and got some pretty good recognition/air play for a '79 cover of Fleetwod Mac's "Oh Well" on album rock stations(damn good cover, too). Saw them live around that time.

There was a big ol' flock of hens out in the open just along the timber line pecking around at grubs and such, the other day. I figured the tom was hiding away in the trees making sure it was safe before he showed himself.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, all!

I didn't do it, again. I start doing something else, forget about it, and the next thing you know, it's midnight already. One of these days, though, I'm going to do it.

#82874 Drunk thread

Posted by Its Cousin on 22 November 2023 - 11:35 AM in Main

Well, it's been over a year since I've drank anything. It hasn't been deliberate; I just haven't gotten around to it. I've thought about having a few, and actually planned on drinking once or twice, but I guess I just got bored with ideal.

So, let's see if I can fix that. Since, it's the holidays, I thought that I would imbib my old favorite, Wild Turkey(in college, my friends claimed that I single-handedly paid for the renovations they did at Austin Nichols back in the 80s). Went to my favorite booze store's website to check the options, and there are a shit-ton, these days, but goodamn, the prices. The neuveau-bourbon drinkers have driven the prices through the roof.

I used to be a wheater kind of guy, so Maker's was my drink, back then. Wild Turkey, then, kind of had a boorish unkempt stigma associated with it, but a friend of a friend convinced to buy a bottle one night, and it's been love, ever since... my fondness for the kicken' chicken transcends its potency and inebriating abilities, it is a genuine enjoyment of the rich flavor and almost hyper-sweetness. A julep made from 101º requires no syrup to provide the sweet; just a splash of water and some mint.

So, will tonight be the night??? Hell if I know, but I plan to knock a few back... maybe I'll go with something from Nelson Co.(no, not the aforementioned wheater). Knob Creek is looking good.

edit: hmmm... this looks good- https://www.totalwin...04&igrules=true

There's bound to be some Trumpers that won't perceive the very obvious, here. Also, since most country music fans are politically conservative, new country artists probably shouldn't try to alienate most of the fan base. This guy, Samuel Saint(he's an ex-Christian artist), also has a pretty good response to Jason Aldean's "Try That In A Small Town" that mocks the shit out that whole redneck culture enshrined in Aldean's stupid fucking song.

Going through a box of old CDs and found a bootleg that a friend had made for me a couple of weeks before he passed. New Riders of the Purple Sage recorded live from a show at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati on Halloween 1971. On this night, Jerry Garcia(Grateful Dead) accompanied the band on pedal steel. If you are unfamiliar, they were an alt-country/country rock/hippie country band that garnered quite a bit of popularity back in the day. I've linked a couple of their songs in this thread, previously.

Exceptionally good, on that night, was the band's cover of "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke". A song written by Joe Maphis(I have linked Maphis' version in this thread, previously) and originally released by Lester Flat and Earl Scruggs(two pioneers of the Bluegrass genre) in late 1952. Also really really good, is a cover of the Band's "The Weight".

The entire show can be listened to/downloaded, here: https://archive.org/...-10-30d1t07.shn

#82868 Election 2024

Posted by Its Cousin on 07 November 2023 - 09:16 PM in News, Current Events, Politics

Daniel Cameron has lost the gubernatorial race in Kentucky. He relied heavily on Trump’s support for the race. Trump even filmed a commercial for him in the last couple of weeks.

All the guy did was attack ads. One of them even photoshopped an image of Beshear onto an image of drag queens. All of his ads linked Beshear to Biden, some of them were fucking disgusting, and all of them contained blatant lies.

Beshear ran a mostly positive campaign focusing on his achievements, rarely attacking Cameron.

Everyone that knows Beshear said he’s a genuinely nice person, some have even said he’s too nice to be in politics.

I guess Cameron saw polling that indicated the people were getting tired of his attacks since his last campaign ad admitted that Beshear was “a nice enough guy”, but he was too soft… it was too little too late.

I also think this was designed with secondary/tertiary interests of alleviating pressure off Russia. Hamas damn sure didn’t have the ability to develop an operation this sophisticated without a lot of help.

Brutally. I don’t think it will be over until Hamas is destroyed. 6 months to a year operation occupying Gaza. There will be a lot of collateral damage due simply to the density.

I also doubt if half the hostages will survive. Maybe a tenth. Hope I’m wrong.

Oh, Republicans control both chambers of our state legislature. During last year's elections they tried get a constitutional amendment passed that would include the abortion ban into our constitution. It failed.

#82836 USA Election thread

Kentucky is one of the few states(only state???) that have off-year gubernatorial elections. Our current governor, Andy Beshear, is a moderate Democrat, and networks have claimed that is the most popular governor in the nation. We are also a solidly red state. He was elected because our last governor(Matt Bevin) was a despised asswipe that attacked teachers, and ended Kentucky's very successful implementation of Obama's Affordable Care Act(it was used as a model for other states). The Act was put in place by Gov. Andy's father who was our, then, governor.

The teachers were protesting a bill, that Gov. Bevin tried to push through the legislature, which would've taken some funding from public schools and allocate it to private schools(including parochial institutions). Most of us supported the teachers as did Andy. He won by a close margin(5500 votes).

This election, Gov. Andy, is running against a staunch conservation, and former McConnell acolyte(also served as his counsel in the senate) and current attorney general, Daniel Cameron. He's the guy that wouldn't prosecute the cops that killed Breonna Taylor.

He also supports the state's draconian anti-abortion law that prohibits all abortions except to save the life of the mother. That's it!

Many are watching this election as it is supposed to be a bellwether for next year's national elections.

Anyway, here is one of Andy's latest campaign ads:

Here is what Megan Thee Stallion thought of Cameron during her SNL appearance a couple of years ago(Cameron is black):

Jesus Christ! Fani Willis gave Gym Jordan one hell of an official smack down in her response to his Judiciary Committee demands.

It’s fucking brutal!!!

If you haven’t read it, it’s only nine pages, but it is nine pages of glorious beauty. Savor this:
