Back to the topic of standardized test, why is this receiving so much flack? When I was in grade school in the late 80s, I had to take the "Iowa Test" every couple of years. In the mid 90s, the state of Ohio required all 8th graders to take the "Proficiency Exam" which was a requirement to graduate. You had until the 12th grade to complete it. When I was a senior, they had an experimental 12th grade proficiency test. I passed every exam on the first try, and with the exception of the written portion on my 12th grade exam, passed with honors. Hell, I had the highest score in the state on the civics portion of the exam. I thought it was a good idea to compare and guage the quality of education received across the state. It also assured that students were meeting the basic standards expected of a high school graduate.

Who is making them? I don't follow political cartoons, so I really don't know. I saw plenty of images of Bush looking like a chimp. Assuming that these cartoons are racially motivated, is making fun of anyone's race really different than attacking their intelligence?

Can someone show me some cartoons that portray the Obama's this way from a legitimate right wing source? I'm not interested in some blogger or remote site. If you're going to claim the collective right is racist, you need something from an organization that is generally respected and representative of the right. Something like the national review comes to mind.

People publishing those cartoons isn't half as important as how many people laugh at them and pass them around for others to laugh at.

Didn't Bush pass No Child Left Behind, which was the greatest educational reform since the department of education was founded? Didn't Democrats scream and yell that it was unfair for the federal government to intrude on States' educational system?

No, they complained that he created a program and then didn't fund it. Even Utah, the reddest of red states, pulled out in protest.

Exactly. Things like that are everywhere & I could care less who publishes it. The fact is that it is out there & if you are a black person, that is offensive. It's offensive to me & I'm white.

This country has a horrid history in regards to treatment of black people & I don't care how many years have passed, it is still & probably always will be a sensitive topic. You don't get over that just because some years have passed...it's part of this country's unfortunate heritage...that never goes away. People need to acknowledge that, understand it & make it a point to be sensitive to that. To do otherwise is simply racist, insensitive & ignorant.

So dumb. It's only to rally the (small) base of hers and that's it. I do have to laugh though, everything is "big government" coming to get us. boo hoo hoo. The comments all think she's a moron though, which of course she is. Speaking of which I think Palin is played OUT. Have you seen her poll numbers? She's scrapping along the bottom.

I don't care for Bachman, but why should the government provide breast feeding equipment either directly or through a write off? Those things cost 30$ at the most? I agree there are better things to argue about and I wouldn't get upset over this, but the point remains that there is a obvious difference in how people on the left view the role of government in our lives.

The goverment is not mandating breastfeeding, they are merely offering a financial incentive for those that choose to? How can that be a bad thing? There is clear evidence that breastfeeding offers varied health benefits to children. WIC is already in place for those that need it who don't breastfeed to cover the cost of formula.

It's in the government's best interest to have healthy babies and breast fed babies definitely get off to a better start with benefits that follow them their whole lives. In terms of future health care costs that $30 spent probably ends up saving thousands.

I don't see where she calls this another example of a nanny-state. How is that a nanny-state?
I don't believe people should receive that child tax credit. Do you? Why should they be rewarded in a sense for having kids?
Sorry if that offends anyone.

[blockquote]Speaking to conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham Tuesday, the Minnesota Republican said Obama's efforts to promote breast-feeding and the IRS's announcement that nursing supplies that aide in the practice can be deducted from tax returns amounts to a "new definition [of] the nanny state."
[/blockquote]
I personally don't have strong feelings either way about the child tax credit.

Sorry, I posted that wrong. I meant "I don't see why she calls it a nanny state". It still doesn't make sense, how can she call promoting breast feeding & supplying whatever as a nanny-state? You know, I've just had it w/the right. They're nothing but a bunch of rabid incoherent hysterical dogs.

Abortion porn: The right works itself into a near-orgasmic frenzy about unborn children, but as soon as they are born - nothing....except a little guilt, and a few less kleenex.

In my personal experience, only the religious right opposes abortion. I myself fully support it for the damage unwanted children cause on society. Freakanomics quite nicely explains why crime dropped off all of a sudden in the early 90s. A bunch of unwanted children were never born in the early 70s due to the decsion of Roe v. Wade. Less unwanted children led to less children running the streets and turning to a life of crime.
