Anyone else live in fear of these visits? The tools that are used, the nonstop requests to "open wide" when you've already opened your mouth as wide as humanly possible... I don't believe there is any "joy" that can be acquired from a visit to the dentist.

I'm actually the opposite. I love getting my teeth cleaned and how they feel afterward, especially if they don't find any cavities which they rarely have since I left my twenties. I'm not crazy about getting root canals but that's only happened twice in my life. If I could afford it, I'd go to the dentist four times a year like my husband has to. Little known fact: heart disease can be caused by poor dental hygiene, which is why he has to go so often---he can't brush as good as he should because of his disability. My mother had an A-Fib of the heart and had to step up her trips to the dentist as well. And if you have a dog, getting their teeth cleaned after a certain age---I think 5 - 7 years old---is considered a major deterrent to them developing heart disease. ETA: If you fear dentist tools now you should have been around with I was a kid and teenager. They drilled without any kind of pain killer or Novocain like they have now. Those were the good old days I can do without.

I like going to the doctor because its the one time you totally get to talk about yourself. The dentist.....not so much. However, my new dentist has flat screen tv's w/cable so last time I was there which was like 2 years ago maybe, I didn't mind it. Time to make another appointment. But let me just say, don't poke at my gums where you can see they're receeding. How'd you like it if I did that to you?

Most people I know dread dentist visits. I actually don't mind them at all especially if it's just a cleaning and x-rays. Truthfully, I find that chair very relaxing! Seriously. When they put you in it and tip it back and then they leave the room for a few minutes - I could fall asleep. The worst thing is if major work does have to be done - the shots in the mouth. Now, my worst dreaded visit - the yearly female visit - I'd rather see the dentist any day than go through that! That's way more painful for me, but I know that you (AMM) aren't able to compare it, sorry.

I don't mind going but I rarely need any work other than cleaning. My dentist is also a guitar player, and Purple/Zep fan - we met him (coincidentally) at "It Might Get Loud" when that movie was in the theater.

My dentist's hygienist always asks me questions with all the crap in my mouth. She's really nice, but what can I say? "Wrah ahh grr wrah, rrrah?"

Based on the price for mouth porcelain, a toilet should cost approximately $83,927.

I hate the dentist and it takes me quite awhile to get up enough courage to go. my husband is worse. we finally found a lady dentist that is extremely gentle. I lucked out as I have pretty good strong teeth and rarely have a problem, but hubby has multiple root canals and all. this gal has tiny gentle hands he says. Posted Image

besides all the open wide and pain there is even when you have all the shots to numb is you are so tense that every few minutes you notice how your body is all tight and you have to tell your self to relax. you relax and within a few minutes your body is back to being on edge again. it is no fun at all and BTW.......

do not watch dustin hoffamn in the marathon man before going to the dentist

That's it. I'm so tense that novacaine doesn't work, the tenseness works right through it.

I have to remind myself to relax every 5 to 10 mins. my whole body just tightens up and it isn't tell I tell my self to relax and do that I can feel how badly my body was tensed. I hate the dentist, course when I was a kid my dad used to remind us how BIG the needles were from any doc or dentist. he haned down a good fear. it must run in families Posted Image

Every time I leave I imagine it is similar to an experience in porn: You've got various people you don't know in your mouth, a bright light shining in your face, it's fairly uncomfortable most times, you are bent over backwards, they keep telling you to open wider, and often you regret that you showed up in the first place. Near the end you've got various fluids all over your face/chin and before you leave they ask you if you'd like to rinse your mouth out and spit in the sink.

I don't mind the dentis TBH. I've never had to have anything major done. I've had to have some work done, but never a full filling. I have had injections in my mouth before which wasn't fun. Or those things they sometimes use that whir over your teeth. Or that really cold stuff they blast them with....

Basically, if none of that stuff gets used, I'm fine. Posted Image

All my wisdom teeth required oral surgery that required significant down time. The one on my lower left was impacted and sideways. After the surgery my left jaw tingled for a few months (I was warned of this because it was close to a nerve.) I also had a cosmetic dentist tell me (about 6 years ago) I had 9 cavities when I first moved back to Tampa. I found that shocking since I'm real big on brushing/flossing, and ended up going to another dentist shortly after. I told the next one I had all these cavities and he looked at me like I was crazy. According to him....no cavities at all. Kinda of depressing that a dentist would also go about business like a mechanic, but I've since read similar experiences from other people online.

Blow you are so lucky. I did great for decades, never having anything but fillings. I finally needed a root canal when I was in my mid fifties. so that was good. jesus I had the same experience years ago with some dentist telling me I had a ton of cavities. after years of going to other dentist my history was either no cavities or maybe one or two but never ever more than that, so I went to a different dentist and he found NONE. I was so mad......the movie lover in me has to know how many of you have seem the marathon Man with dustin hoffman? a great film and they have some dental scenes....is it safe? Posted Image they are hard to watch.
