Hmm...not crazy about it. "Bible Black" is alright, but this is fairly uninspired.
And what the hell happened to Dio? He sounds horrible.
Dio has been living on reputation for a long time. The guy who sang on Heaven and Hell and the Rainbow stuff was long gone even by Dehumanizer - he doesn't even sing any more, he just talks loud and evilly. I think it may be a matter of breathing and age, notice that he never sings long lines any more, and even on the fast songs he isn't singing fast.

I didn't have words for it, but your "talks loud and evilly" pretty much sums up what I was thinking. Mostly low notes, compared to his old range, and very drawn out syllables. Spot on, with that analysis.
The album does have some good riffs (Follow the Tears) and stuff, but Dio just isn't worth much anymore. Real shame. Even though the songs aren't fantastic, I feel like a good vocal performance would make this one a keeper, but Dio takes it from Average + to Average -

yeah, there's a few good instrumental bits and pieces but Iommi is kind of dialling it in too as far as riffs. I'll try to listen a few more times, but it's never going to be easy unless there's a Dio removal device somewhere. Honestly I think Ozzy sounds better on Black Rain, and awesome as Ozzy is I didn't think there would come a time (after 1976) where I thought his voice was better than RJD's
I'm gonna need some Master of Reality to wash this from my brain.
I'm really really disappointed. DIO! WHY HAST THOU VOICE FORSAKEN THEE!

I don't have much by way of boots. Mostly just Gov't Mule, as they allow taping and sharing.
