OK...weird place for this, but it was the only thread that popped up when I searched for "Kindle" or "Nook", so... Does anyone have either of these devices? I'd be curious to get some feedback, as I'm thinking of using birthday/Xmas money on one. Also, if I want my as-of-yet unborn daughter to real literature rather than texts, I figure I'll need a gadget.

I was going to ask the same thing. I am thinking about buying a Kindel for my wife. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Since I'm not the only one interested, I made this a new topic. Also, I have to use my mod powers once every 3 months or I have a tendency toward premature moderation.

I have a first gen kindle and like it, the screen is much better for reading than an iPad for example, even though I'm an apple fanboy. I really only use it for fiction and a few biographies though, the navigation for reference/text books etc is too annoying. There's quite a few free/cheap books on amazon and (legally) free books at other sites also. It has great battery life, and books download fast since they are just text. The new kindles look nice, with better button placement.

How much free reading material comes with it? How much are ebooks on average 10-14 bucks? How good are they for the internets?

I don't think you get anything free with it, but there's a lot of free/cheap books on amazon. It has a web browser but it's pretty useless. New books ten to be 9.99

Kindle is pretty good. Books are pretty cheap and fast at downloading.

Pretty much anything that could be referred to as a "classic" is free in some way or another. Also, if it's shit but is old...probably also free. The key is that it must be old enough for the copyright to be expired.

One thing that worries me in choosing between Nook and Kindle is that their books aren't readable by the other reader, meaning that if you've made a serious investment in ebooks, you're kind of stuck with that format for good.

Found out you can download ebook from the NYC library, though not compatible with Kindle unfortunately.

So does anybody know which one is better? My step daughter seems to like the Nook, says it's more compatible with other things. I wasn't really listening to her though, lol.
